The #CarnivorrGoesForGold Project
Step aside, Julie & Julia. There’s a new food power couple in town: Jonathan and Kaitlin!
That’s right, in an effort to fully reconnect myself with the Los Angeles food scene after living in New York for the past five years, I have decided to follow in the footsteps of Jonathan Gold, the LA Times Food Critic and Pulitzer prize-winning writer. Mr. Gold is, without a doubt, the food authority here in the Golden State (pun intended), so I knew that he was the one to turn to for a true culinary immersion. I read his restaurant reviews like they were love poems, listened to his weekly recaps on the KCRW’ “Good Food” podcast, and watched City of Gold, a documentary about his life. I was completely inspired by his passion for food – whether he was partaking in a fancy tasting menu, or discovering a hidden gem.
The movie finished, the credits rolled, and I decided to do the unthinkable: to eat at all of his 101 Best Restaurants in LA in 101 days.
Why the deadline? When people typically try to complete the Gold project, they try and do all 101 restaurants in a year. Well, I don’t have the luxury of time, because I’m moving to Italy in March. But also I just LOVE a challenge, and think that the added pressure of 101 restaurants in 101 days makes the project more fun!
The start date: September 13, 2017
The end date: December 23, 2017
Bring it on!
Oooh, and there was one more complication… I wanted to do the 2017 List for my challenge, but J Gold doesn’t come out with his new list until October 23. With no time to waste, I decided to get a jumpstart on the 2017 list by starting with restaurants he included on the list all 4 years, as well as the one’s at the top of last year’s list.
