#CarnivorrGoesForGold: Week Six

The #CarnivorrGoesForGold challenge continues with a recap of my visits to Rice Bar, Mian, Gwen, Kismet, Republique, Animal, and Girasol. Stay tuned as I eat at all of Jonathan Gold's Best 101 LA restaurants in 101 days!

32. RiceBar (#85 on the #JGOLD101)

I first experienced RiceBar at the Gold List 2017 reveal party, where I tried the Pork Longanisa bowl! But, of course, I made a trip to their DTLA shop to try a few more menu items!

What I ate: turmeric pork adobo rice bowl, squid rice bowl, vegetable lumpia (sweet potato, green beans, tofu, and sprouts in a spring roll), pan de sal (lamb sandwich with flash fried potatoes - my fave!)

33. Mian (#75 on the #JGOLD101)

If there's one thing I've learned from this list, it's to go to the San Gabriel Valley to get my spicy Sichuan pepper fix! Mian is from the same chef as Chengdu Taste, but this spot specializes in spicy noodles!

What I ate: zhajiangmian (cha cha-ing mien) beef noodles with Sichuan peppercorn sauce, fried egg, and greens, served with a side of mung bean soup (kinda like iced tea, to help numb the spicy pain!)

34. Gwen (#58 on the #JGOLD101)

The Disneyland of meat! If you remember from Episode One, I first went when Gwen's restaurant was closed and only got to sample stuff from the butcher counter. Naturally, I went back for the tasting menu with my friends Austin and Mrs. Plyley. We did the five course tasting menu, and added some supplements.

What I ate: charcuterie / terrines (duck speck fruit rollups!), burrata with smoked tomatoes & sea grass, smoked hamachi with butter beans, hamachi collar, fennel ricotta ravioli with pine nuts and brown butter, lamb shank (with chimichurri, olives, capers), boneless short rib, 30-day dry-aged bone-in rib eye from Creekstone Farms, sorrel sorbet with huckleberry and yogurt, apple clafoutis with creme fraiche gelato

35. Kismet (#21 on the #JGOLD101)

Kismet, a modern Middle Eastern cafe in Weho, burst onto the LA dining scene this year and became instantly popular. My friend Jesse (@scrumphsus) and I decided to investigate...

What I ate: blueberry scone with lemon cream, polenta (with lamb, green chili, charred cabbage, poached egg), Turkish-ish breakfast sampler (veggies, greens, barbari bread), FLAKY BREAD (got the savory one with soft-boiled egg, labneh, tomato & spice)

36. Republique (#19 on the #JGOLD101)

Republique is probably my favorite restaurant in LA. I could spend all day sitting inside the gorgeous indoor atrium eating pastries and reading a book. I’ve tried pretty much everything on the menu, and I LOVE that you don’t need a res.

What I ate: the burger, the kimchi fried rice, the shakshuka, the savory egg dishes, THE best French toast in the world (so soaked, almost gooey!)

37. Animal (#20 on the #JGOLD101)

Animal is a dream restaurant for a Carnivorr like me. Bring your appetite and your bravery, and leave your vegetarian friends at home. Be prepared to get down on some funky animal dishes from famous restauranteurs Jon & Vinny.

What I ate: hamachi tostada (little spicy for me), chicken liver toast (first time I’ve loved chicken liver), crispy pig ears (with an egg + red chili), off menu BONER BURGER )with a side of oxtail poutine, gravy, cheddar), fried rabbit legs (first time, so yum!) in rich white gravy, bacon chocolate crunch bar with salt and pepper ice cream

38. Girasol (#54 on the #JGOLD101)

When I think of fine dining in LA, Studio City isn't the first neighborhood that comes to mind. And yet, I was blown away by my specially curated tasting menu from Chefs Justin Abrams and Polit Castillo at Girasol, made with all farmers market and foraged ingredients!

What I ate: marigold cocktail (gin, aperol, st. germaine, champane), housemade bread with sage and lovage honey butter, THE best meatball I’ve had (blend of veal, beef, italian sausage - lemon thyme and cheese sauce on top I wanted to bathe in), hamachi (with apple, sorrel consommé, fresno & asian pear), grilled scallop with mushrooms and sunchokes, applewood smoked bacon (with burrata, pink peppercorn, pear), date cake with salted caramel sauce
